Christmas
Christmas Day is on December 25.This is an important Christian holiday. On Christmas Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Christians go to church and sing Christmas songs called carols.
Christmas traditions come from many countries. A German tradition is the Christmas tree. People put an evergreen tree in their house and decorate it with lights and ornaments.
The tradition of Santa Claus comes from the Netherlands. Children believe Santa Claus comes on Christmas Eve. He brings them presents.
Christmas cards are a British tradition. People send Christmas cards to wish each other a “Merry Christmas.”
On Christmas Day families and friends get together to give presents and have Christmas dinner. Turkey, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, fruitcake and eggnog are Christmas foods.

Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks for the good things in our lives. It is on the second Monday in October.
The native people were the first people living in Canada. They gave thanks for the harvest. They prayed, danced and played games. Then the settlers came from Europe. The native people taught them how to plant corn, beans and squash. They also showed them how to gather wild rice and make maple syrup. This helped the settlers to survive the long cold winters.
Today many families and friends get together for Thanksgiving. They give thanks for the good things in life and say, “Happy Thanksgiving.” They eat a turkey dinner with wild rice, stuffing, cranberry sauce mashed potatoes, squash and pumpkin pie.

Halloween
Halloween is on October 31.On Halloween evening children put on costumes .They dress up as clowns ,princesses, witches ,ghoste, skeletons and other things .They go from house to house shouting “Shell Out!”or “Trick or Treat!” Neighbours give children candy ,chips and gum.
